Senior Engineer - Adhesive Bonding
The Senior Engineer - Adhesive Bonding , reports administratively to the Sr. Leader, Polymers, Adhesives, and Bonding, in the Materials Interfaces & Surface Engineering Division. This position will lead projects with limited supervision to create value from designing, developing, and assessing new technology in the area of adhesive bonding and fiber metal laminates in Arconic's processes and products. The incumbent will bring expertise in bonding materials, bonding processes, component testing and design to support current and future projects aimed at creating, deploying, and improving our products and processes including process documentation, specifications, and quality standards to support the technology transfer and implementation to internal and external customers.
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
Develops project proposals aligned with business needs and technology roadmaps
Identifies emerging technologies with relevance to Arconic's processes and products, and opportunities to prototype/benchmark
Leads projects from conception and experimental design to successful completion and implementation
Identifies opportunities that create value and new Arconic intellectual property
Solves bonding, material and surface related problems, seeks and identifies new opportunities, and looks to implement innovative solutions for internal and external customers
Fosters collaborative relationships with internal and external resources to support and advance projects
Acts as a representative for the Material Interfaces and Surface Engineering Division with BU partners and external customers
Requires only limited supervision, and provides functional guidance to junior engineers and technicians
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
Fundamental and working knowledge of bonding technology including state-of-the-art materials, practices and standards, with particular focus in the areas of aerospace and automotive concepts
Strong background knowledge of material science and chemistry of adhesives and fiber-metal laminates, and their interaction with metal surfaces as applied to product and process design and performance
Strong hands-on experience in fabricating bonded specimens and testing performance
Appreciable knowledge in technologies used to prepare surfaces for bonding and lamination
Appreciable knowledge in material and design levers to improve the performance of bonded joints in bond-strength, durability, environmental/chemical resistance, crack growth, etc.
Appreciable knowledge of bonding failure modes and mechanisms and how to test
Demonstrated ability to develop depth in unfamiliar technical areas to develop product and process solutions
Understanding of how to translate specifications and designs into products and testing procedures
Ability to connect projects to potential value
Excellent technical writing, documenting, and presentation skills
Ability to influence others both above and below job function
Willingness and ability to network and collaborate across a broad spectrum of internal and external partners and customers
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace/Automotive/Chemical/Mechanical/Polymer Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or Chemistry from an accredited institution
Minimum 3 years’ experience in adhesive bonding process development or R&D.
